What exactly is an Air Max unit? It’s a translucent pouch of pressurized gas strategically placed in the midsole of each shoe that offers superior comfort and cushioning when compared to basic foam. Where it Began: The History of Air Maxes for Women

Designer of Air cushioning technology Marion Franklin Rudy wasn’t always interested in shoes. Trained as an aerospace engineer, he brought this knowledge to shoe design which gave him the idea to put airbags inside of shoes. The rest is history.

The first Nike shoe to have Air was the Tailwind, released in 1978. However, it wasn’t until 1987 that the first Air Max shoe was designed by Tinker Hatfield. The ‘90s became a time of creative inspiration for the Air Max label. The Air Max 90 featured a thick wedge sole paired with bright, bold colors, while the Air Max Plus exuded a sleek vibe with its curvier silhouette.
